Ahatanhel Kryms′kyi (1871–1942) was an important early modernist writer and Ukraine’s leading Orientalist scholar whose life ended in the GULAG. One of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1918, he authored numerous scholarly publications in fields ranging from history to linguistics, in both Ukrainian and Russian. Among his scholarly writings are a three-volume history of Islam (1903–04); a two-volume history of Turkey and Turkish literature (1910–1916); a three-volume history of the Arabs and of Arabic literature (1911–1913); a three-volume history of Persia and Persian literature (1901–1914); one-volume histories of Turkish, Persian, and Arabic literatures published in the …
