Vasyl′ Stefanyk (1871–1936) was a major figure of Modernist-era Ukrainian literature. In a slim volume consisting of just fifty-eight short stories (some of them less than a page in length) written and published for the most part between 1897 and 1905, he developed a unique, instantly recognizable style that marked him as a forerunner of Expressionism, a technique that would become prominent in European literature and art some two decades later. Despite the size of Stefanyk’s published œuvre, which also includes several prose poems, sketches, and essays, its influence in the development of Ukrainian literature is hard to overestimate.
