Romano Bilenchi is one of the few writers from the dark years of Italy’s Fascist period whose fiction is of interest today for artistic as well as historical reasons. For although poetry, especially that which concentrated on the writer’s more personal, intimate life, was able to survive and even flourish (the case of Montale) during Mussolini’s regime, times were much harder for the novel, which typically focuses on social issues. And social issues were always at the center of Bilenchi’s political and artistic activities.
