Andrew Kei Miller, known to the publishing world simply as “Kei” Miller, was born in Jamaica on 24 October 1978. He was raised in Hope Pastures in St. Andrew parish, a small and, as Miller describes it, “uneventful and nondescript” suburb on the fringes of Kingston (“Kei Miller interview”). He lived in his childhood home until his early twenties, and grew up with his mother, father, and older sister. Miller’s parents had a number of different jobs over their lifetimes, but worked mainly as civil servants. As a child, Miller had a natural proclivity toward English (or rather what he calls “Englishes”), and knew from a young age that he wanted to be a writer (ibid.).
