Daughter of a Somali diplomat who fled Somalia after the 1969 coup d’état by Siad Barre, the journalist and novelist Igiaba Scego was born in Rome on March 20, 1974. Winner of the 2003 literary prize Ex&Tra with her short story “Salsicce” [Sausages], Scego made her debut in the literary world with a bilingual children’s book, La nomade che amava Alfred Hitchcock - Ari raacato jecleeyd Alfred Hitchcock [The Nomad Who Loved Alfred Hitchcock, 2003). The autobiographical story was inspired by her mother’s experience of migration to Italy, an event which is at the core of many of Scego’s novels and journalistic pieces.
