Born into a bourgeois family in Castel San Pietro in the Bolognese Apennines, Matteo Peregrini graduated in 1620 from the University of Bologna with a dissertation on the contemplative and active life. In the same year he became a professor of logic there, and in 1622 he obtained a doctoral degree in theology and began teaching natural philosophy. Later he also obtained a degree in utroque iure (civil and canon law) and took the sacred orders. He actively participated in the intellectual life of Bologna, joining the Accademia dei Gelati and the Accademia della Notte, where he presented some poems as well as a commentary on Della Casa’s verses, Perché si ami il bello [Why Beauty Is Loved].
