Imre Madách was born in 1823 in Alsósztregova (Dolná Strehová) in what was then northern Hungary and is now southern Slovakia. He died at the tragically young age of 41 in 1864 in his home village, after authoring what is arguably the most important dramatic work of Hungarian literature, Az ember tragédiája [The Tragedy of Man], first published in 1862. Madách belonged to a noble family that traced its ancestry to descendants of the Slav Count Radun de Oszlár who received a royal gift of deed under King Béla IV in 1250.
