Monique Bosco was born in Austria in 1927 and died in Montreal in 2007, barely a week before her 80th birthday. At the age of four, her family moved to Paris, this move coinciding with her parents’ divorce. Of Jewish descent, the family moved again after World War II broke out, this time to the south of France in the hopes of avoiding deportation. As a teenager, Bosco was forced to live in hiding for her own protection. She survived the Holocaust and was not interned in a concentration camp, but nonetheless she suffered from the consequences of living locked up in an apartment during the crucial years of her youth, not being able to attend school, social events, or simply go outside for a walk.
