Born in Palermo in Sicily in 1907, Gian Gaspare Napolitano was a novelist, short-story writer, playwright, journalist, war correspondent, screenplay writer and film director, who also worked in broadcasting for Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) in Rome, which became his adopted home. Son of a father from a military family, killed in Africa in 1915, and a mother from the Abruzzo, Napolitano attended school in L’Aquila and Verona. The adult writer would evoke a summer spent with his father in barracks in one of his finest short stories, “Il figlio del capitano” (“The Captain’s Son”), which movingly evokes the child’s unspoken fears of disappointing his cavalry officer father, by his inability to ride and his fear of dogs and …
