Gherasim Luca, one of the most innovative poets writing in French in the second half of the twentieth century, was a prominent member of the European avant-garde. Luca (whose original name was Salman or Zolman Locker) was born in Bucharest, in 1913, in an Ashkenazi Jewish family.
