The eldest of three, Bille was born to a gentle, devout peasant mother who was the second wife of a formidable father: stained-glass master, painter, collector of rural religious art and would-be businessman. Her parents’ courtship was recounted as “Virginia 1891”, one of the two novellas of Deux passions (1979). The Upper Valais country folks and sceneries were a major source of inspiration for Bille. She pursued no higher degrees but bathed in art and literature, among books and artists.
