The eldest of three, Bille was born to a gentle, devout peasant mother who was the second wife of a formidable father: stained-glass master, painter, collector of rural religious art and would-be businessman. Her parents’ courtship was recounted as “Virginia 1891”, one of the two novellas of Deux passions (1979). The Upper Valais country folks and sceneries were a major source of inspiration for Bille. She pursued no higher degrees but bathed in art and literature, among books and artists. She dabbled in languages and accounting, assisting her father at home, then she experienced a short-lived first marriage to a French actor who took her to pre-World War II Paris.
