Born in Milan on January 22, 1932, into an affluent middle-class family (his father was a high-ranking official in the city administration), Giovanni Raboni was from his early youth a passionate reader. It was in books that he found a safe shelter during the years of World War II, after the bombings of Milan had begun and he had taken refuge with his family in the countryside far from his beloved city, to which he so often refers in his poetry. Another topic that constantly surfaces in Raboni’s writing is that of death, a trauma that marked his life from early on with the sudden disappearance of both his parents in the short span of years from 1952 to 1954.
