Andy Adams was an early 20th century writer of American Western fiction. He focused entirely on the figure of the cowboy and his roles of caring for cattle on the ranch and driving them to markets in the North. These drives are a well known part of American history taking place from 1867 to around 1887. Most of these drives began in central or southern Texas and ended in central or southern Kansas, the destination slowly moving further south and west as railroads advanced. Adams’ best known work, The Log of a Cowboy, tells the story of a drive from the Rio Grande to the Blackfoot Indian Reservation near Fort Benton, Montana, a distance of around 2200 miles.
