Rosa Montero has been a consistently bestselling novelist and renowned journalist since the 1970s. She has also published children’s stories, travel writing, interviews, essays and other non-fictional or semi-fictional work. She was born in 1951 into a lower-middle class family living in the Cuatro Caminos area of Madrid. Her father, a banderillero or bullfighter’s assistant, gave up his occupation when she was five years old to set up a brickworks. Rosa suffered from tuberculosis and anaemia as a child and for four years of her young life was unable to attend school.
