Girolamo Gigli (Nenci) was born on October 14, 1660, in Siena, a small city in the then-Tuscan kingdom along the only road extending from Rome to Paris. In 1674, his exceptional progress in school, especially in literature, philosophy, rhetoric and architecture, moved his mother’s uncle, Girolamo Gigli, to adopt him and to name him sole heir to his estate, a fortune which the young Girolamo eventually dissipated. When he was fifteen, he married Laurenzia Perfetti, a noblewoman he later mocked for her avarice and bigotry in his comedy La sorellina di Don Pilone (Don Pilone’s Little Sister, 1712).
