Uładzimier Niaklajeŭ is one of Belarus’s outstanding poets whose virtuosity reached a peak in a series of semi-fantastic narrative poems in the 1990s. His later turn to prose included a scandalous novel, Labuch [Jobbing Musician, 2003] and some excellent stories collected in 2009, at the same time as he started writing verse again. His return home from Finland in 2010 brought great attention in the Western press for his fate as a martyr following reckless political activism, forming an opposition party named (in Russian) Govori Pravdu (Speak the Truth), and standing against the authoritarian leader as a candidate for the presidency of his country.
