Shirlee Taylor Haizlip is a best-selling non-fiction writer and lecturer whose first book, The Sweeter the Juice: A Family Memoir in Black and White (1994), came into prominence as a major work of African American autobiography. She is the author of two other autobiographical works: In the Garden of Our Dreams: Memoirs of a Marriage (1998) (co-authored with her husband Harold) and Finding Grace: Two Sisters and the Search for Meaning Beyond the Color Line (2004). She was born in 1937 in Stratford, Connecticut, in an African American upper-middle class family, and was named after Shirley Temple, the blonde blue-eyed movie star popular in the 1930s.
