Known to many as Carmiña, Carmen Martín Gaite was one of the most important and socially engaged female authors of twentieth-century Spain. Although she is often associated with the group of Spanish writers known as “The Realist Generation”, she experimented with other genres and forms over the course of her lengthy career. She was prolific, and penned novels, short stories, poetry, plays, children’s literature, film scripts and essays, in addition to academic and historical works and translations of works by authors such as Virginia Woolf, Gustave Flaubert, Rainer Maria Rilke, Emily Brönte and C.S Lewis.
