“Guerrillero Heroico” (Heroic Guerrilla), the iconic portrait of Che Guevara taken by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda in March 1960, is claimed to be the most reproduced photograph in history. Whether it has been appropriated by revolutionaries opposing the profit-based market system or by salesmen seeking to profit from the market, the portrait has served to perpetuate the caricature of Guevara as a revolutionary dreamer and armed internationalist. In its shadow are other more varied images: “Che” as a member of the Cuban government, a diplomat, a manual worker and a family man (he had one child with his first wife, Peruvian leftist Hilda Gadea, 1955-1959, and four children with his second wife, Cuban revolutionary Aleida …
