Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos is the spokesman of the guerrilla group EZLN (Ejército Zapatista para la Liberación Nacional – National Zapatista Liberation Army), and also the author of a large corpus of texts in a variety of genres, among them chronicles, political communiqués, theoretical articles, stories, re-writings of history, and open letters. He first entered the public sphere during the Zapatista Uprising in Chiapas, Southern Mexico, on 1 January 1994. Since then, he has carried out a variety of public and military functions for this group.
