Leandro Fernández de Moratín (1760-1828) was the outstanding dramatist of eighteenth-century Spain, not only because of the enduring audience appeal of his plays, but also due to their critical acclaim and influence on later playwrights. His subsequent literary reputation derives, too, from his achievements as poet, translator of drama and observer of social and cultural life in England and Italy.
