Since her first success on the Parisian stage with Conversations after a burial, in 1987, Yasmina Reza has published eight plays, all translated from the original French into more than thirty-five languages. Her works have delighted ever larger audiences all over the world, have made the best stage actors of the time vie for a role, have been awarded the very best prizes and awards, and yet have been decried by reviewers as mere “bourgeois theatre”. Only in recent years have theatre chroniclers and literary critics questioned the viewpoint that equates popular success with suspicion of low-brow quality, humour with superficiality, and reassessed Reza’s place in contemporary French drama.
