Jeannette Armstrong (Okanagan) is one of the best-known Native Canadian writers. She is also a visual artist, sculptor, an activist and educator. She is one of the first Native women in Canada to publish a novel: Slash (1985). Her second novel, Whispering in Shadows, was published in 2000. Apart from the two novels, she has published a collection of poetry, three books for children, and numerous essays and speeches on Native life and beliefs, the rights of the Indigenous people, and on ecology and Native aesthetics.
