For a long time neglected by the literary institution, or relegated to the ranks of antiquarian scholarship, Jean de Léry’s major work, Histoire d’un voyage faict au Brésil aurement dit Amerique has been recently recognized as a key document of the intellectual and literary history of the sixteenth century. As a token of this renewed esteem, Léry’s travelogue had been put on the lists of the French agrégation for the program of 2000. In 2001, Jean Claude Ruffin reopened the files from “France Antarctique” in his award winning novel Rouge Brésil.
