Maksim [Maxim] Karlovich Kantor was born in Moscow on 22 December 1957 into a family of prominent Jewish intellectuals. His paternal grandfather, Moisei Isaakovich (1903-82), was a professor of Mineralogy in Buenos Aires and later in Moscow, as well as a dramatist, writing in Spanish. His father, Karl Moiseevich (1922-2008), was born in Argentina. His mother, Tat’iana Sergeevna, is Russian and is a teacher of geography and related sciences, while his paternal uncle, Lazar Moiseevich (1905-90), was an economist.
