Claudio Magris is one of the most significant, innovative and complex authors of contemporary Italian literature. He was born in 1939 in Trieste, a city on the Adriatic sea, in the northeastern part of Italy, close to Slovenia – a real melting pot of cultures, languages and religions, and a bridge between Eastern and Western Europe. He lived here until he moved to Turin, where he studied German literature and became Full Professor of German literature in 1968 particularly thanks to his dissertation The Habsburg Myth in Austrian Literature, which is not only a turning point in the field of German Studies but had a significant impact on European culture in general.
