Since the late 1960s Adam Michnik has been a major figure in Polish political life and one of the most known Polish intellectuals in the world. He has received a large number of awards, wrote a number of books, and is Editor-in-Chief of Gazeta Wyborcza, an influential Warsaw daily. In the 1980s many Poles considered him a national hero. In spite of that, no one in Poland wrote his biography. There is a genuine lack of not only scholarly texts, but also personal remembrances of people who knew him at various points in his life.
