Vincenzo Consolo was born in 1933 in Sant’Agata di Militello, a small town on the northern coast of Sicily. In 1952, following in the footsteps of many other intellectuals, Consolo left his native island and moved to the northern Italian city of Milan to pursue studies in Jurisprudence. It is there that he published his first work, “Un sacco di magnolie” [A Bag of Magnolias] (1957). While the communicative, referential language of the story is not representative of Consolo’s mature writing style, this early publication is significant because it bears witness to the author’s life-long commitment to voicing the plight of the subaltern.
