Matilde Serao was born in Patras, Greece, in 1856 to a Neapolitan journalist father and a Greek mother who was a teacher. However, she is most associated with Naples, since the family returned there when she was three years old and it was in Naples that she carved out a highly successful career as a journalist and writer of fiction of various kinds. She also worked in Rome for some time as a young woman. She married an equally famous journalist, Edoardo Scarfoglio, in 1884. In the course of their marriage, they ran three newspapers together (the Corriere di Roma, the Corriere di Napoli and Il Mattino). They also had four sons.
