Michele Leggott (b. 1956) is a New Zealand poet, editor and essay writer. Her early poetry was panned by some critics who failed to recognise her innovative techniques, which followed those of objectivist American poet Louis Zukofsky (1904-78). Leggott has published ten poetry collections since 1988. She was the inaugural New Zealand Poet Laureate during 2007-09, became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to poetry in 2009, received the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in 2013 and was named a fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi in 2017. She played a leading role in establishing the New Zealand Electronic Poetry Centre (nzepc) at Auckland University in 2001 and is chair of the nzepc board. …
