Marilyn Hacker, born in Bronx, New York, on Thanksgiving Day, 1942, was the only child of Hilda (Rosengarten) and Albert Abraham Hacker, Jewish professionals who had been the first in their families to obtain college degrees. She would earn a degree as well, but only after a series of adventures that suggest her indifference to convention and the complex strength of temperament and emotional intensity that have always supported – indeed, deployed – her intellectual gifts.

In her early teens already a serious writer of poetry, she enrolled in the Bronx High School of Science, then as now one of the “magnet” jewels of the New York City public school system. There she befriended another exceptional student: the Harlem-…
