Daughters of Captain Elihu Brown and Elizabeth Dearing Brown, Corinna Brown (1812–1854) and Ellen Brown (1814 -1862) were born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Captain Brown, a successful privateer against the British during the War of 1812, died in a Spanish prison in 1819. After Mrs. Brown died in 1832, several family members, including Corinna and Ellen, migrated to territorial Florida in 1835. Corinna married army surgeon Dr. Edward Aldrich in 1837; Ellen married army officer Lt. James Anderson in 1840. The sisters lived together or near each other in various places throughout frontier Florida until moving to New York City in 1850. James Anderson died in the Mexican War in 1847, and Edward Aldrich moved to California in 1850.
