María Luisa Bombal, one of the foremost Chilean writers of her generation, was born on 8th June 1910 in the coastal town of Viña del Mar. Hers was a wealthy family of Huguenot Alsatian origin on her mother's side, and Franco-Argentine on her father's. She was brought up to be bilingual in French and Spanish, first in Chile and then in Paris, where she finished her secondary education at the Lycée La Bruyère. She proceeded to study literature at the Sorbonne, and though she went as far as writing her dissertation on Merimée, she confesses that she left without a degree for want of a qualification in Latin (“el latín … ¡qué lata!” [Latin …What a bore!] (328).
