Born in Chateauguay, a suburb of Montreal, Chester Brown professed early on an admiration for comics, and superheroes in particular. In his late teens, he travelled to New York and visited the editors of comic concerns such as Marvel and DC. He returned to Montreal after receiving encouragement but no job offers. He then returned to school, briefly, and then made a second trip to New York, where his work was again rejected.

He decided, instead, to pursue his new interest in underground zones, and moved to Toronto in 1979. He continued to draw strips for the alternative press, which meant a pauper-like existence. A submission to Raw Magazine was turned down, though he received a good deal of encouragement. Friendships …
