Although Antonio Buero Vallejo is associated with the group of Spanish dramatists known as “The Realist Generation”, he went on to experiment with other genres and forms over the course of his lengthy theatrical career. Yet there is a consistency of theme and style in Buero’s theatre. Recurrent themes in his work include an exploration of freedom and its limitations; an awareness of the civil war and its legacy; an interest in art; and a fascination with history and memory. His heroes, despite their own limitations and those imposed by society, are always engaged in a search for the truth.
