Georges Decaux once wrote admiringly of “Jules Claretie, qui n’est pas seulement un homme de lettres, mais qu’on pourrait appeler, si la mode était encore aux sous-titres et aux surnoms, […] l’homme de lettres” [“Jules Claretie, who is not only a man of letters, but whom one could call, if it were still in fashion to use subtitles and nicknames, […] the man of letters”] (Decaux, 6-7). With such acclamatory statements common during his lifetime, it is surprising that Jules Claretie, prolific writer, journalist, and historian, remains relatively unknown today.
