Reinhard Goering’s biography is rather bizarre: his restlessness and pathological insecurity illustrate how much the expressionist writer and unorthodox physician was influenced by the social and intellectual upheavals between the turn of the century and the rise to power of Germany’s National Socialists. In spite of the findings of recent biographical scholarship, our knowledge of Goering’s life remains somewhat sketchy.
