Sergei Eisenstein [or Eizenshtein] is one of the world's most famous and prestigious film directors. His most influential film, Bronenosets Potemkin [The Battleship Potemkin, or “Potyomkin”], is still regarded as one of the most significant films in cinema history. His film theories remain the subject of great interest and debate, despite “montage cinema”, which he pioneered, being out of vogue for many years. It is much less well known that, before embarking on a career in film, Eisenstein had been a pioneering avant-garde theatre director, and that his theory of montage had originally been developed in relation to the stage.
