Peter Cooley lives in New Orleans, where he is Professor of English at Tulane University. He was born on 19 November 1940 in Detroit, where he also grew up. He attended the Cranbrook School for Boys and entered Shimer College in Waukegan, Illinois, before graduating from high school, and receiving his A.B. from Shimer College in 1962. He received his M.A. in Arts and Literature from the University of Chicago in 1964, and his Ph.D. in Modern Letters from the English Department at the University of Iowa in 1970, where he was a student in the Writers' Workshop.
