Anna Zofia Gąsienica-Byrcyn
Anna Zofia Gąsienica Byrcyn was born in Zakopane, situated at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, in Poland. She is a literary translator and a lecturer. She holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She teaches Polish and French courses at Saint Xavier University and Lewis University. For a number of years, she has taught Polish language, literature, and culture courses at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Loyola University. She also taught Polish language courses at the Indiana University-SWSEEL, University of Pittsburgh-SLI, and Oakton Community College. She published Tamara Łempicka’s Veils of Transgressions as Captured in Robert Dassanowsky's Poems in the book entitled Wheels of Change: Feminist Transgression in Polish Culture and Society edited by Jolanta Wróbel-Best (Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, 2021). Moreover, she co-translated Eliza Orzeszkowa’s novel Marta (Ohio University Press/Swallow Press, 2018). Her essay Motyw światła i gliny w twórczości Joanny Pollakówny oraz Jacka Sempolińskiego appeared in the book entitled Strony Joanny Pollakówny (WNUKSW, 2017). Her article O poezji Marty Fox pędzlem Miró pisanej was issued in the literary monthly journal Śląsk (2017). She also wrote Pamiętnik, diariusz, dziennik na lekcji języka polskiego jako odziedziczonego published by the Kwartalnik Polonicum (2018) and Poetic Texts in Polish Heritage Classes for the East/West: Journal of Ukrainian Studies (2017). In the past, she translated Marta Fox’s poetry available in the bilingual edition Everything That Is Impossible/ Wszystko co niemożliwe (2012). She has published articles, translations, and book reviews in the Kwartalnik Polonicum, Polish Review, Slavic and East European Journal, Sarmatian Review, Modern Poetry in Translation, Lituanus, Dirty Goat/Art Journal, Visual Anthropology, East/West: Journal of Ukrainian Studies, Postscriptum, Więź, and Śląsk. Her essays on the poetry, tales, legends, art, music, and dances of the Tatra Mountains appeared in the bilingual Tatra Eagle/Orzeł Tatrzański. Moreover, she presented numerous papers at the international conferences in the USA, Poland, England, and Canada.
