Enikő Basa

Enikő Molnár Basa received her BA in English from Trinity College (Washington, D.C) in 1962 and degrees in Comparative Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1965 (MA) and 1972 (PhD). She taught, among other schools, at the University of Maryland and American University before accepting a position at the Library of Congress 1977. Upon her retirement from there in 2004, she was a Visiting Lecturer at the U. of Debrecen (Fall 2004) and the University of Szeged (Fall 2009) in Hungary. From October 2002 through September 2003 she held the J.W. Kluge staff fellowship at the Library of Congress, where she did research on Hungarian literature.

Enikő has held various editorial positions in both Hungarian and Comparative Literature journals and currently serves as the Associate Editor of Hungarian Cultural Studies; E-Journal of the American Hungarian Educators Association . She is a member of the Modern Language Association and has been active in the Southern Comparative Language Association since 1974. She is also a member of various Hungarian associations, notably being the founder of the American Hungarian Educators Association in 1974 and its Executive Director since 1980. Dr. Basa is listed in the Marquis Who's Who publications (Women, America, the World), Contemporary Authors and various Hungarian publications. She authored a monograph on Sándor Petőfi (1980) and edited Hungarian Literature for the Council on National Literatures (1993). She has also contributed to various reference works on world literature, has written numerous articles and presented papers at many conferences on Hungarian literature and its comparative connections. Currently she is working on a book about Hungarian poets as "spokesmen for the nation" when political dialogue was suppressed,
