Danuta Shanzer

Danuta Shanzer was born in Manhattan, New York City. She studied Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr College (B.A. 1977) and Literae Humaniores at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University (D.Phil. 1981). She taught at the University of Manchester (1980-81), at the Univ. of California at Berkeley (1981-1990), at Harvard University (1989), at Cornell University (1989-2003), and at the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2003-2011), before taking up an appointment as Univ.-Prof. für lateinische Philologie der Spätantike und des Mittelalters at the University of Vienna (2011-). She is the author of 2 books and numerous articles, and editor of 4 books. She has many varied scholarly editorial functions, including the editorship of the Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library, Latin Series (Harvard University Press) and the editorial board of the CSEL (Univ. Salzburg). She has held Fellowships from the Marshall Aid Commission, the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, and the ACLS. She is a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America and Corresponding Fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Her research focuses on the literary history, Latin philology, and social and religious history of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.
