Nick Turner

I'm an Associate Lecturer at the University of  Salford, UK. My work has focused on the following: the development of the canon in relation to women writers; realism in contemporary fiction; literary prizes. I'm particularly interested in mid and late 20th-century British women novelists such as Iris Murdoch, Barbara Pym, Elizabeth Taylor, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Elizabeth Bowen and Barbara Comyns. I have reviewed for the Times Literary Supplement, and am the co-editor and co-founder of the online journal Writers in Conversation. My major publication is Post-War British Women Novelists and the Canon (London: Continuum, 2010). I have co-edited a special issue of 'Women: A Cultural Review', on Barbara Pym, and recently published an article on Elizabeth von Arnim in the same journal. I am the co-editor of the 'Elizabeth Bowen Review' and Co-Chair of the Elizabeth Bowen Society. Current work is an article on the forgotten crime writer Mary Fitt, an essay on Barbara Comyns, and an edited collection of essays on women writers and comedy in the interwar period. A future project will examine the reputations and status of intermodernist women writers Ivy Compton-Burnett, Pym, Taylor and Angela Thirkell.
