Sante Matteo

Sante Matteo, Professor Emeritus at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, studied and taught all periods of Italian literature, as well as literary theory and cinema, with forays into French literature and culture. His publications include seven books: as author, Il secondo occhio di Ulisse: Saggi di letteratura e cultura itliana (2019), Radici sporadiche: letteratura, viaggi, migrazioni (2007), Textual Exile: The Reader in Sterne and Foscolo (1985); as editor, ItaliAfrica: Bridging Continents and Cultures (2001), Africa Italia: Due continenti si avvicinano (with Stefano Bellucci, 1999), Italian Echoes in the Rocky Mountains (with Cinzia Donatelli Noble and Madison Sowell, 1990), and The Reasonable Romantic: Essays on Alessandro Manzoni (with Larry Peer, 1986); three volumes as Editor of Italian Culture: The Journal of the American Association for Italian Studies (2001-2002); and dozens of articles, reviews, interviews, broadcasts, and other publications, on topics ranging from the 13th century’s Le Roman de la rose and Marco Polo, to Machiavelli in the 16th century, Vico and "Ossian" in the 18th, Foscolo and Manzoni in the 19th, to contemporary figures Giose Rimanelli and filmmakers Federico Fellini, Ettore Scola, and Bernardo Bertolucci.

He convened five national and international symposia (Manzoni, the AAIS, Africa/Italy, Italian American Studies, Transalpine relations), organized over 75 conference panels and presentations by guest lecturers, and presented more than 150 papers, interviews, and lectures at professional meetings and colloquia and as guest speaker at other academic and cultural venues. He served on the Editorial boards of Italica, Italian Culture, and Machiavelli Studies and held national offices in the Modern Language Association (1988-92) and the American Association for Italian Studies, serving as Executive Secretary and Editor of the AAIS newsletter, Il Gonfaloniere, from 1987 to 1993, and as Editor of the Association’s journal, Italian Culture, 2001-2002.
