Mary Ann McDonald Carolan

Mary Ann McDonald Carolan is Professor of Modern Languages & Literatures and Director of the Italian Studies program at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT (USA). A graduate of Dartmouth College, she received her Ph.D. in Italian Language & Literature from Yale University with a dissertation on Manzoni. Prof. Carolan has published on authors such as Dante, Manzoni, Morante, DeLedda, Serao and on film directors Michelangelo Antonioni, Sergio Leone, Ettore Scola, Ferzan Ozpetek and Nanni Moretti. She has also written on the role of women in Italian American comedies. Her book, The Transatlantic Gaze: Italian Cinema, American Film (SUNY Press, 2014), tracks the profound and sustained influence of Italian cinema on American film-making from the postwar period to the present.
