Toni Bowers

Toni Bowers, Ph.D., is Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Force or Fraud: British Seduction Stories and the Problem of Resistance, 1660-1760, which includes discussions of a number of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century epistolary fictions, and The Politics of Motherhood: British Writing and Culture, 1680-1760. In addition, she has co-edited (with John Richetti) an abridged edition of Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, and has published more than thirty scholarly essays and book reviews. With Professor Tita Chico of the University of Maryland, she has edited a collection of essays called Seduction and Sentiment in the Atlantic World . Among many other courses at the University of Pennsylvania, Professor Bowers teaches an advanced year-long seminar on Epistolary Fiction. An expanded essay on the subject is forthcoming in The Oxford History of the Novel in English.
