Carlo Coppola

Carlo Coppola holds an M.A. in English and a PhD. in Comparative Literature from the University of Chicago. A specialist in Urdu, Hindi and Sanskrit literatures, he is co-founder/co-editor of Mahfil: A Quarterly of South Asian Literature (1963-72) and editor-in-chief of the Journal of South Asian Literature (1973-2002). In addition to scholarly articles, translations and co-translations of poetry and fiction from several South Asian languages, and sixteen interviews with major twentieth-century South Asian writers, he has published five books, most recently Urdu Poetry, 1935-1970: The Progressive Episode (OUP: 2017) and Another Life: Thirteen Stories and a Play (HarperCollins: 2018), English translations of major short stories and a ground-breaking play by Hindi writer Mohan Rakesh (1925-72). Retiring after four decades of teaching at Indiana University, Northwest Campus, Gary, IN, and Oakland University, Rochester, MI, he is an instructor of courses on world literature, cultural history of South Asia and the Middle East, the religions of South Asia, and food history at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).
