Aleks Sierz

Aleks Sierz FRSA is Visiting Professor at Rose Bruford College, and author of the bestselling In-Yer-Face Theatre: British Drama Today (Faber, 2001), which is a pioneering study of the new wave of young British playwrights that emerged in the 1990s. Other books include The Theatre of Martin Crimp (Methuen, 2006), which examined the work of this innovative playwright, and John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger (Continuum, 2008), which looked in depth at this landmark play. His most recent book, Rewriting the Nation: British Theatre Today (Methuen Drama, 2011), surveys British new writing for the theatre in the first decade of the new millennium. He is also editor of The Methuen Drama Book of 21st Century British Plays (2010) and co-editor of The Methuen Drama Guide to Contemporary British Playwrights (2011). He is a keen fan of new theatre writing and his extensive academic publications include chapters in books about contemporary theatre, as well as entries in Censorship: A World Encyclopedia, and the entry on Sarah Kane in the New Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford University Press, 2004). He teaches modern British drama at Boston University, London, and edits websites about contemporary theatre (www.sierz.co.uk, www.inyerface-theatre.com, and www.theatrevoice.com). His other writing includes an award-winning audio-guide, The Venice Tapes (1996), and a translation of Letitia Russo’s Dead End for the National Theatre’s Shell Connections (2004). He works as a writer, journalist and broadcaster.
