Barry Spurr

Professor Barry Spurr (MLitt Oxon MA PhD Syd FACE) is Professor of Poetry and Poetics in the University of Sydney, where he has been a member of the English Department for 40 years. In 2007, he was elected a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators in recognition of an ‘outstanding contribution to education’. Professor Spurr is the author of several internationally-acclaimed books, most recently 'Anglo-Catholic in Religion': T.S. Eliot and Christianity (Lutterworth, Cambridge, 2010), now the standard account of its subject. He is also the author of Studying Poetry (2nd edn., Palgrave Macmillan, Basingstoke, 2006) and See the Virgin Blest: The Virgin Mary in English Poetry (Palgrave Macmillan, New York, 2007). He has also written on Lytton Strachey's prose style (Edwin Mellen, New York, 1995) and on liturgical language revision (The Word in the Desert, Lutterworth, Cambridge, 1995). Professor Spurr has most recently contributed to two Cambridge Companions: on T.S. Eliot and on The Waste Land (due for publication in 2015).
