Neil Cornwell
Neil Cornwell was Professor Emeritus of Russian and Comparative Literature at the University of Bristol, UK, where he had been working from 1987. A graduate of SSEES, University of London, he previously taught at the (then) New University of Ulster, Coleraine (1972-3), and lectured at Queen's University, Belfast, from 1973 to 1987.
He has published comparative studies on the Fantastic
(Harvester, 1990) and the Absurd (Manchester UP, 2006), plus
James Joyce and the Russians (Macmillan, 1992), and books
on Vladimir Odoevsky (1986 and 1998), Pasternak (1986), Pushkin
(1993), and Nabokov (1999).
He was the editor of the Reference Guide to Russian Literature (1998) and The Routledge Companion to Russian Literature (2001). His other edited books include collections of essays on Daniil Kharms, the Russian Gothic-Fantastic, and the Society Tale in Russian literature (19th-century). A contributor of articles to a range of books and journals, he was also co-editor of a 'New Casebook' on Henry James (1998), as well as being the translator of collections of stories by Kharms and Odoevsky, plus Mayakovsky's travel memoir My Discovery of America (Hesperus, 2005).
He edited and wrote for The Literary Encyclopedia (with responsibility for Russian literature, plus Vladimir Nabokov and Henry James) from 2002.
